Live Evil: Katatonia London Islington Academy Review

Image

We sent trusty scribe Tom Dare over to Islington Academy last night to review Katatonia’s sold out show. Here’s what he had to say:

After a ropey start, the warmth of Junius blossoms, surrounding you like a firm hug, before Alcest make everyone drift of into a dreamy place of light, love and all that is good and dear in life. As they close with a sublime Summer’s Glory, any uninitiated to the Gallic magicians are firmly won over, if the roar of approval is anything to go by. But even two bands as good as Junius and Alcest get thoroughly and completely upstaged by the brilliance of Katatonia. The set tonight is dominated by songs from Dead End Kings, and that The Racing Heart and Dead Letters sound so excellent alongside the exceptional older tracks likeSweet Nurse and a stunning July shows how fantastic that album actually is. Those songs sound a hell of a lot heavier live too, and the combination of typically fantastic Swedish guitar work and Jonas Renkse’s beautiful voice seduces and mesmerises a crowd who know all the words to the old songs, all the words to the new songs, and want to sing. They’re on for not much shy of two hours, but even as Leaderssignals the end of the night, they’ve far from overstayed their welcome. Sets like this only ever end too soon.

By the way, have you seen our interview with Anders in Stockholm earlier in the tour?
